Wolfe impresses with skills, but he’s only warming up
Friday, August 31st, 2007Throughout the preseason, Wolfe has been the leading rusher for the Bears, picking up 104 yards in 39 carries through the preseason. His receiving yardage is also impressive, picking up an average 6 yards per reception. But Wolfe didn't get to really shine until this past preseason game against Cleveland, which not only got him 53 yards in 6 catches, but showed the league that his 5'7" frame can put down and block defenders that have at least 50 lbs on him size-wise.
Jerry Angelo (who, coincidentally was also coached by NIU's Jow Novak, who found Wolfe and made him a star) has said that one of the reasons the Bears had drafted Wolfe was because of his vision and his speed, and that he admits seeing flashes of Warrick Dunn-like ability in Wolfe during training camp. The whiff he caused a Browns defender Thursday night was just one of many occasions that Wolfe's shiftiness and speed has made him more wiley than a fox for a defender to catch. The Browns game was the first time this talent has been made public for the national eye to see.
However, Northern Illinois fans (like myself) can surely say that the best has yet to come. Wolfe is only beginning to warm up to his new role as a backup in the NFL and not the star of the team. Wolfe has a tendency to start off on low heat, then get hotter and hotter as the season progresses. This will only be greater now that he needs to prove to coaches that he can become a starter, and this reporter can say she's personally seen Wolfe's tenacity to succeed at what he wants.
Wolfe is only getting started; he will take off like a rocket as time goes by.
Cedric and Adrian better keep their eyes open and wary... Wolfe will have no problem proving he's the better man if he stays healthy.
